Abu Dhabi: Imams across the UAE have called on the people to participate in the Earth Hour, a global sustainability initiative, which will be observed on Saturday from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm local time.
Leading the Friday's prayers, the Imams, whose sermons are coordinated by the General Directorate of Islamic Affairs and Awqaf, also urged the worshippers to participate in the global event as part of their individual concern for the planet.
All over the world people are expected to turn off their lights for an hour in a symbolic gesture to save the planet to show their support towards voluntary environmental action.
Several public and private sector institutions in the UAE have already announced their participation in the event.
Earth Hour began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when all non-essential lights were turned off in 2.2 million homes and more than 2,000 businesses to raise consciousness about global warming. Since then, the event has gone global, with
more than 50 million people participating in 35 countries in 2008.
In 2009, participation hit one-billion mark across 88 countries. In 2010, a record 128 countries and territories joined the global display of climate action as 1.3 billion people showed their support holding candlelight vigils.
From across the Pacific, to Australia, Asia, Europe Africa and the Americas, iconic landmarks such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, New York s Empire State building and the Eiffel Tower in Paris will stand in darkness raising people's
consciousness about the environmental benefits of reducing energy consumption.
