Jammu: Director of a shelter for mentally challenged children and a guard have been arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting five girl inmates of the home Jammu, police said on Thursday.
"A director and a guard of a home for mentally-challenged children have been arrested on charges of sexually abusing five girl inmates of the centre in Channi Rama area of Jammu city," Deputy Inspector General of Police Shakeel Beigh said. Director S Sharma and Angad Kumar, a guard, have been arrested, he said.
Police has also registered a case against the Home for Mentally Retarded Children and began investigation, the DIG said. Giving details, he said complaints were received by District Commissioner, Jammu, A K Sahu regarding the Home, following which he constituted a Board to investigate the matter.
The Board was represented by Deputy Commissioner, Additional DC, SP, and doctors, including gynaecologists and psychiatrist. "The report (of the Board) came out with revelations that five mentally challenged girls were sexually exploited.
We immediately registered a case and started investigation," the DIG said. There are 45 mentally retarded children in the shelter, he said, adding that "it is shocking". The home is run by the Rotary Inner Wheels.
