Trade Unions in Uttar Pradesh Divided Over GST

Although there are many trade unions and traders across the country who are going on a strike over the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST), but the trade unions in Uttar Pradesh seem to be divided on the issue.

Lucknow: Although there are many trade unions and traders across the country who are going on a strike over the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST), but the trade unions in Uttar Pradesh seem to be divided on the issue.

On one hand the national president of Akhil Bhartiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal, Sandep Bansal has said traders from across the state will be participating in the Bandh called by them on Friday, on the other, regional president of Uttar Pradesh Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal, Banwari Lal Kanchhal has not yet taken any clear stand and is yet to take a decision to support the strike or not.

Speaking to News18, Sandeep Bansal from Akhil Bhartiya Udyog Vyapar Mandal said, “I would give thanks to the efforts of Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma. But this decision is of the Indian government. Traders across the country are agitated. The garment trader is agitated. Even today the textile market of the whole country is closed. The trader is still unaware on GST."

“The government should consider giving three months time to the traders to understand the GST. It should not be implemented forcibly on traders. Forcibly implementing GST, the government will not get any benefit. Bansal said that traders across the country are joining the bandh on June 30. Uttar Pradesh will also be closed on this day. Also, we are opposing e-billing as not every merchant is having a computer. So, traders should be allowed to do business like they were doing it before.”

Banwari Lal Kanchal from Uttar Pradesh Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal said, “The Deputy Chief Minister has given us assurance after that he will keep our demands in front of the GST Council. I am confident that the government will consider trader’s demands and will find a way out.”

The Adarsh Vyapas Mandal of Lucknow has opted to stay out of the Bandh called by the trade unions in protest against GST implementation. Sanjay Gupta of the Adarsh Vyapar Mandal said that they will support the GST implementation by fireworks sharp at 12 midnight on June 30th 2017.
