Timeline: SIT probe into the 2002 Gujarat riots
Read the sequence of events since the SIT took over the 2002 Gujarat riots case.

New Delhi: The Special Investigation Team to probe the 2002 Gujarat riots was formed in 2008. Following is the sequence of events since the the SIT took over the case:

March 26, 2008: The Supreme Court constitutes a five-member SIT headed by Ex-CBI Chief R K Raghavan to probe nine riot cases.

April 27, 2009: The Supreme Court asked the SIT to look into complaint of Ehsan Jafri's wife Zakia about the alleged role of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others in her husband's killing.

July 30, 2009: The Gujarat government appealed to the Supreme Court saying the SIT is exceeding jurisdiction in examining Modi's role in the riots.

March 11, 2010: Modi was issued a notice by the SIT to appear before it on March 21 to respond to allegations against him.

Mar 27, March 28, 2010: The SIT questioned Modi in the Zakia Jafri case.

February, 2011: The SIT submitted its report.

May 5, 2011: The Supreme Court asked the new Amicus Curiae Raju Ramachandran to assess SIT report and look into lapses.

June 18, 2011: Ramachandran visited Gujarat to meet police officers and others.

July 25, 2011: Ramachandran submitted his report to the Supreme Court in a sealed envelope. The court decided to keep his report confidential.

September 12, 2011: The Supreme Court directed the SIT to file its final report to the lower court. The apex court observed that the trial court will decide on the application in accordance with law.
