Ludhiana: The Punjab police on Saturday arrested and dismissed three policemen, including an assistant sub-inspector, after they allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl in a park behind the deputy commissioner's residence in this industrial city Friday night.

The three policemen overpowered the girl - who is from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh - and had come to meet her boyfriend in the Rakh Bagh park, and raped her.

People who heard her cries took her to the home of the deputy commissioner, from where she was taken to a hospital for medical examination. The park is in an upscale area of the city where senior district and judicial officials reside.

"The medical examination of the girl confirmed that she has been raped. This is a shameful act committed by somebody in uniform and therefore stern action against the accused was required. We have dismissed them from service without any inquiry," Ludhiana district police chief R.K. Jaiswal said.

Those dismissed are assistant sub-inspector Inderjit Singh, Hari Om and Gurmail Singh. All three were on the police control room duty when they saw the girl in the park.

The accused were booked for rape and sent to judicial custody by a local court.
