Tinsukhia: Three jawans were killed and four others were injured on Saturday during a gunbattle between suspected Ulfa militants and security forces in the Pengri area of Tinsukia district of Assam, Police said.
The militants had reportedly ambushed an army vehicle with an IED blast at 5:30am after which there was an exchange of fire between the two sides, DGP Mukesh Sahay said.
"They (the militants) had planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on the road. When the IED exploded, the convoy stopped. Then the militants fired indiscriminately," Defence Public Relations Officer, Lt. Col. Suneet Newton, said.
Locals said that the militants had fired upon the vehicle from both side of the road, which are forested areas.

On Wednesday, militants attacked a van of the Pengeri tea estate killing one person and injuring two others.
The encounter is underway and the forces are trying to corner the terrorists.
Officials said that the the injured were airlifted to a nearby army base hospital.
Meanwhile, Home minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and tweeted that MHA was monitoring the situation closely.

CM Sarbananda Sonowal said his government has zero tolerance against the terrorism and instructed the DGP to visit the area to take stock of the situation.
