World Sparrow Day was recently observed, on March 20. It is held on this date every year to spread awareness about the significance of sparrows for our ecosystem and biodiversity. With the increased cell wave radiation and pollution, the species of sparrows are declining. In the past, the sight of them hanging in groups in front of the houses in Tamil Nadu villages was a sight to behold. Human practices can be one of the reasons for the endangered species of sparrows in India. In such a situation, a bird lover was shocked to see the plight of sparrows in the current times and hence decided to create a special habitat in his house to shelter sparrows.

Anantula Ramesh of Kisan Nagar in Telangana’s Karimnagar district was concerned about the survival of sparrows with the increase of technology and mobile towers. He decided to take necessary steps to save the birds. He has turned the terrace of his house into a special habitat for sparrows. The birds have built beautiful nests on the premises of their house. Anantula Ramesh feeds the birds through an oil can so that they don’t get affected by air pollution. To build the same, he takes an empty oil can and cuts four sides of it. After slicing, he bends the four corners of the can and fills it with seeds in it. Necessary seeds, water and rice chains were arranged for the sparrows at his house. Grass is also made available for sparrows to build their nests. The number of birders visiting there is steadily increasing as they can find all the necessary survival items in one place.

While talking to Local18, Anantula Ramesh said that he made this effort to save the endangered sparrows. “At the beginning only one or two birds used to come …now their number has increased and it is very pleasant to see a group of sparrows in the morning,” he added. Ramesh said that the birds also seem to be extremely happy as they get all the necessary benefits at this place. The family members of this bird lover are also helpful and support Ramesh’s cause. Ramesh said that he wants everyone to save grain and water for sparrows, not in their backyard, but in front of their house.
