KOCHI: A UGC-sponsored ten day theatre workshop ‘Naadaka kalari’, focusing on different genres of dramatic skills and social issues like empowerment of Dalits and women’s upliftment is being conducted at Maharaja’s College. The workshop was inaugurated by K G Paulose (former VC, Kalamandalam) on May 27 at 10 am in the college auditorium and will commence on June 5. Veteran theatre director Shashidharan Naduvil is the director of ‘Naadaka kalari’. “The ten- day camp is a great opportunity for our students to imbibe acting skills,” said Sumi Joy Oliyapuram, camp co-ordinator.The workshops are conducted daily by veteran theatre directors and performers like Dr K G Paulose, Chandradasan (theatre director), Gopan Chidambaran (Theatre Dept, Kaladi Sanskrit University) etc.The workshop concentrated on theatre-related topics like creative drama, acting skills, history of acting, vocal use etc. Although there are students who are active in theatre, there is a lot of differences in the attitude of the students of the past and present.“Earlier, they were more extroverted and high spirited. But the new generation is introverted, sensitive and more attracted to popular art forms like cinema and serials,” said Gopan Chidambaram. He also said that the decline of art forms like drama is due to their lack of popularity, attractive pay and stages to perform.” Several students who took part in the workshop said that the camp is worth it and will help them in their future endeavours. They are also planning to organise a campus theatre, where they can stage various plays and also attract more youth to this field.
