A Delhi-based physiotherapist Jatin Chaudhry's treatment helped Atwal with his injury.

New Delhi: Arjun Atwal's PGA Tour victory at the Wyndham Championship was a triumph not just for India's top golfer but also for a Delhi-based physiotherapist and his controversial methods.

Jatin Chaudhry, 28, boasts an enviable list of other clients for a young physio, including cricketer Yuvraj Singh and tennis player Sania Mirza.

He is also physio of the Kings XI Punjab side in the Indian Premier League.

But the form of reflexology he practices is still not universally accepted. It stimulates blood flow to the injured area using massage combined with needles and magnetic waves.

"I would say most of the doctors here invited me to work with them and lecture them on the method. But there still are people who doubt the method and that is what pains me," Chaudhry told Reuters on Monday.

"Last year Arjun Atwal came to me with grade three tears in both his shoulders," he said. "The doctors in the U.S. had told him surgery was the only option and he hated the idea, for it meant a long layoff.

"He came, underwent a 25-day treatment and went back. His father-in-law, based in Delhi, would keep in touch with me and I'm glad he won something big.

"I did not watch him play last night but I'm happy he won. He really worked hard."

Atwal won the Wyndham Championship by one-stroke, the first Indian and sixth Asian-born player to win on the PGA Tour.

Chaudhry treated Yuvraj's knee and shoulder problems in 2008 even though the cricketer was initially sceptical.

Yuvraj subsequently was effusive in his praise and recommended the method to Mirza, who was nursing a wrist injury.

She called her treatment a miracle and in turn recommended Chaudhry to Atwal.

"I guess why players prefer it is because it spares them the trouble of undergoing surgery, which keeps them out of action for a long time," the physio said.
