Like most things Japanese, even the prized pearls taken from their oysters seem to be following their ‘smaller and better’ doctrine. While it has worked wonders on the electronic appliances front, the exquisite Keishi pearls might just make you believe that you can add ‘gorgeous’ to that list. Brought to Chennai by Mehta Jewellery, who have procured the rare, albeit smallish, pearls from Japan, they are part of a collection of earrings and pendants that will be here till September 10. In Japanese, Keishi means ‘Poppy seeds’ because of their size and texture.
“It is very rare to find this particular variety because they can only be extracted from the Akoya oysters. These are only found in the deep ocean bed, off the coast of Japan,” explains Naresh Mehta, managing trustee of the jewellery house at their Khader Nawaz Khan Road outlet. While it is very difficult to find this particular pearl here, importing it and instilling it in Mehta’s brand of jewellery has been quite an experience, he adds.
“Considering the size of the pearls, we have had to use it in miniature pieces that are also stylized with coloured gems, 18k gold and diamonds,” he says, the sparkle in his eyes evident. Much like the ‘small is beautiful and priceless’ tag that comes with platinum and diamonds, the collection is understandably expensive. The range begins at a lavish `1.25 lakh and moves upward, depending on the size of the stones and the work involved. “People are opening up to better jewellery designs in Chennai and we feel that the collection will do well. We have planned to bring many more international gems down here and give it our own touch,” he adds.
If at all the jewellery spoke for itself such that it managed to catch your eyes in such a large jewellery store, the only thing that enhanced the entire experience was when they were paraded around by a host of models.
