New Delhi: The Cellular Operators Authority of India(COAI) on Thursday said Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)'s regulation on call drops will stand as of now which means telecommunication companies will have to pay Re 1 for every call drop.
Cellular Operators Association of India's Rajan Mathews met TRAI chairman RS Sharma on Thursday afternoon to discuss the issue. Mathews said TRAI can look at changes to methodology for call drop drive tests later. A joint team from TRAI and industry will meet every two weeks to discuss the test results.
Sectoral regulator TRAI had made it mandatory for telecom operators to compensate consumers by one rupee for call drops with effect from January 1, 2016. TRAI said a telecom operator should send a message through SMS or USSD to the calling customer within four hours of the occurrence of call drop and the details of amount credited in his account. For post paid customers, the details of the credit should be provided in the next bill.
TRAI said it will keep a close watch on the implementation of the mandate as well as the measures being initiated by service providers to minimise the problem of dropped calls and may undertake a review after six months.
Telecommunication companies had submitted a letter to TRAI saying mobile tariffs may go up if they are forced to compensate for dropped calls.
