Chennai: Police on Wednesday arrested Lenin, a News editor of Dina Malar, a Tamil daily which published a news item giving details of a statement purportedly given by a TV artiste arrested in connection with a prostitution case.
The arrest followed protests from south Indian artistes Association led by R Saratkumar against the publication of the names of the artistes in the newspaper along with their photographs and demanded action against the newspaper.
The association had filed a complaint with the Chennai Police commissioner on Monday in this connection.
The TV actress had reportedly told the police that she was not the only artiste indulging in prostitution. There were other artistes, some belonging to yesteryears, who were running brothel houses, she is understood to have told the police.
The Madras Union of Journalists condemned the arrest of Lenin, saying the police action was highly "prejudiced and undemocratic".
In a statement, the union said the newspaper had published a clarification and it was open to the film actors to address the issue legally through the courts.
The police action was aimed at intimidating the media of Chennai and a threat to the working journalists, it said.
