KOCHI: Piravom paid a tearful farewell to one of its illustrious political leaders. The late Food and Civil Supplies Minister T M Jacob was laid to rest at Attinkunnu St Mary’s Jacobite Church, Kakkoor, in Piravom on Tuesday with full state honours.Before the mortal remains were taken to the cemetery, thousands of local people paid their last respects to their leader at his home. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Union Minister of State for Agriculture K V Thomas, Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, Finance Minister K M Mani, Industries Minister P K Kunhalikutty and other ministers attended the funeral. K V Thomas placed a wreath on behalf of the Prime Minister while Elizabeth Antony placed a wreath on behalf of her husband, Defence Minister A K Antony.The funeral services began at his residence at 10 am. Catholicos Baselios Thomas I, the head of the Jacobite Church, led the funeral services when the body was brought to the church. A condolence message sent byIgnatius Zakka I Iwas, the Patriarch of Antioch and All the East and Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, was read out during the service.After the church services, the body was draped in tricolour and a 21 gun salute was accorded to the departed leader before he was laid to rest.
