HYDERABAD: In a major development in the ongoing probe into various questionable deals of the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy regime, his son and Kadapa MP YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was arrested by the CBI in Hyderabad on Sunday evening. The widely anticipated arrest came on the third day of his interrogation by the CBI, but not before scores of his YSRC party leaders were taken into custody or put under house arrest by the state police who are on high alert to prevent possible violence.Interestingly, the news of the arrest came first from a leader of YSRC within minutes of Jagan’s family members, including his mother and wife, leaving their residence for the Dilkusha guesthouse where the MP was being grilled.Jagan was scheduled to appear before the CBI court on Monday as per the orders given by judge. Now that he has been arrested, the CBI would produce him before the court instead of Jagan presenting himself. For the night, Jagan would be kept at Dilkusha guest house itself. Politically, the arrest came at a time when Jagan Mohan Reddy was in the thick of electioneering in support of the 17 legislators who faced disqualification and are fighting byelections scheduled for the second week of June. There are already indications that Jagan’s mother Vijayamma will now steer the election campaign. In fact, Jagan approached the High Court seeking time to appear before the CBI as he was busy with electioneering in 17 Assembly and one Lok Sabha constituency, but his plea was rejected. The CBI action comes almost 10 months after it registered the First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the alleged illegal assets case of Jagan Mohan Reddy.Already, the case has claimed many, including minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana who was arrested a couple of days ago for having allegedly granted favours to a company which made substantial investments into the business entities belonging to Jagan.A curfew-like situation prevailed in Hyderabad since Sunday evening as TV channels flashed news of Jagan’s imminent arrest and all important roads were taken over by city police, Rapid Action Force (RAF) and contingents of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).All roads wore a deserted look and Hyderabadis stayed indoors mostly.Minutes after his arrest, Jagan’s mother Vijayamma, wife Bharati, sister Sharmila and her husband Anil Kumar arrived at Dilkusha guest house and were allowed to meet Jagan.CBI joint director VV Lakshminarayana held a long meeting with the additional solicitor general and top advocates from New Delhi, at Hotel Taj Krishna.Jagan has been arrested under sections 120-B read with 420, 409, 420 and 477-A, and section 13 (2) read with 13 (1) (c) & (d). He will be produced before the Special CBI Court on Monday.Sources said the CBI was not convinced with the replies given by Jagan during his three-day questioning and it is likely that the agency will seek his custody for further questioning. In fact, Jagan shot counter questions to the agency during questioning. He reportedly said he was busy with political activities and that his confidante V Vijay Sai Reddy was the person who handled the business activities.Following this, the CBI also summoned Vijay Sai Reddy to Dilkusha guest house on Sunday morning.
