New Delhi: Former India wicket-keeper Kiran More will chair his last meeting as head of the national selection committee on Sunday. More and his team will select the Indian squad for the Malaysia tri-series and the Champions Trophy.
But it might turn out to be one of the easiest meetings he has ever attended.
With no serious cricket being played when India toured in Sri Lanka a few days ago, it is very unlikely that the selection committee will make any changes for the up coming Malaysia tri-series.
"From my point of view and also that of the coaching staff we have achieved what we wanted to achieve. The feedbacks from the players have been good. They have learnt a lot from the camp. We hope the next two camps will go just as well," Indian coach Greg Chappell says.
But the team for the Champions trophy is likely to have one major change.
Sources have confirmed to CNN-IBN that the team management wants some experience in the bowling department.
There is strong possibility of leggie Anil Kumble making a much-awaited return to coloured clothing.
If that happens then Ramesh Powar may make way for him. Since it is a 14-man squad Suresh Raina and Dinesh Mongia will fight for the last spot.
The selectors may go in for experience in bowling department but they don't have the same inclination towards batting.
That means Sourav Ganguly will continue to wait for his next innings in international cricket. But the former captain still feels he has it in him to make it to the squad.
"Well I don’t know. I will not be able to say I will, because the World Cup is just a tournament. It’s hyped, because it’s the World Cup. There is cricket after that. There is loads of cricket after that. And I’d still be 34. If I keep on performing, I’ll still keep my fingers crossed," Ganguly says.
Both Ganguly and Kumble, two great warriors of Indian cricket, might face contrasting fortunes on Sunday.
For one it will be another sign that the end is near and for another it will one more chance to grab his rightful place in the shorter version of the game.
