KOCHI: In order to uplift the existing solid waste treatment plant at Brahmapuram, the Kochi Corporation is planning to carry out its repair work soon. Already, tenders from firms to repair, operate and maintain the plant have been invited. The scope of the work also includes developing sanitary landfill at Brahmapuram.“The existing plant is defunct and do not have the capacity to process the huge quantity of city waste moved to the site every day. At present, we cap the waste using plastic welding technology. Now, we have decided to carry out the maintenance work on the existing plant and it would be made functional until a new plant is set up,” said T K Ashraf, Health Standing Committee chairman.Ashraf said: “The corporation is on the lookout for an experienced agency with at least three years of experience in integrated municipal solid waste management, operations and disposal.”“The successful bidder will maintain a complaint register to register grievances of the public and other stakeholders,” he added. The existing plant, which is the first Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project to be implemented in the city, was set up four years ago. However, it did not function properly for even two years. The Pollution Control Board officials who visited the plant recently said that the-then corporation council had ignored several expert warnings against the technology and design adopted at the now-defunct Brahmapuram plant. They also said there was a serious fault in the design of the plant.Ashraf said the rectification is only a temporary measure and setting up another plant would be more financially feasible than repairing the existing one. “But it will take more time. So we are left with no option but to go in for the rectification of the existing plant,” he added.
