With plans to make Kerala achieve power surplus by 2014, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Friday that ‘Emerging Kerala-2012’, a global connect programme to be held from September 12 to 14 at Kochi, will ‘not just be about signing MoUs’.
Speaking at a press conference, he said that it would be about creating opportunities. “Kerala will take the lead in the manufacturing, tourism, education, health, infrastructure and finance sectors. Our aim is to make double power generation in the next two years,” he said.
He believes that Kerala has no reason to worry about skilled manpower, land availability and power capacity. “Presently, we have large tracts of land just for industrial development,” he added. He also said that with Public Private Partnership, the state plans to develop an Urban Mass Rapid Transport System.
Kerala’s 12th Five-year Plan period will focus on e-governance and development of IT and IT enabled services, said V Somasundaran, Additional Chief Secretary (Industries), Government of Kerala. “From September 1, all government departments in the state will come under a single-window tracking system,” he said.
