Rae Bareli: Congress President Sonia Gandhi is in Rae Bareli on a thanksgiving trip after winning by a huge margin in the by-polls held recently. But with elections in UP, less than a year away, she is all set to take on UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress have been at loggerheads over the deteriorating power situation in Rae Bareli. Sonia has accused Mulayam of deliberately cutting power in her constituency.

Sonia told Congress workers in Rae Bareli that the UP government is filing false cases against the party.

"Ever since I won from here people say there has been power cut. Is this fair?" Sonia said.

Power has always been an issue in Rae Bareli and Amethi, with both Sonia and son, Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Mulayam government of playing politics over power supply in the region.

Realising the importance of power, just before the by-elections, Mulayam had in fact promised 24-hour power supply to Rae Bareli if it voted for SP.

But with Sonia having won with over four lakh votes, Congress claims Mulayam snapped the wires.

"This is happening only because I am the MP from here," Sonia asserted.

Congress has only nine MPs and 16 MLAs from Uttar Pradesh. Many expect the Congress to go into an election mode with this particular Sonia trip.

Already Mulayam has announced an unemployment allowance for the youth and has begun attacking the Congress.

Over the next few months the Congress will be working hard to make its presence felt in the region.

For now its Sonia and Rahul's charisma and divine intervention that the party is banking on.

What's your reaction?
