Shimoga (Karnataka): Shops were closed on Monday and tree branches burnt after a 14-year-old girl died under mysterious circumstances on Sunday.
The girl was allegedly abducted, drugged and gang-raped by three unidentified youths on 29 October. The victim's parents had lodged a complaint on Saturday after the girl managed to escape her abductors.
No medical care was given to the victim and she was admitted to the local hospital only after she complained of vomiting and fever on Thursday. She was taken to Manipal hospital on Friday but died the same afternoon.
Local residents called for a bandh and police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the protestors. Prohibitory orders have also been imposed under Section 144 till 10 November.
There have been no arrests made so far in the case, and officials are waiting for the postmortem and forensic report on the cause of death to give them more leads.
Police have lodged a case under POCSO Act apart from kidnapping, molestation and murder charges.
