Mumbai: With the ten-day Ganpati festival nearing an end, the police personnel are on high alert in Mumbai. Additional security forces have been deployed across the city and the traffic restrictions will be applied to the roads from Wednesday noon.

"We appeal the Mumbai people to begin the Ganpati emersion early morning because rains might create a problem later during the day. Also we request the motorists to follow our directions," Joint Commissioner Satish Mathur of Mumbai’s Traffic Police department said.

Closed Circuit Tele Visions have been installed at various locations and mobile vans fitted with cameras would patrol the city's roads throught the day. Adding to that would be 2,500 cops on Mumbai's roads assisting Mumbaikars.

With detailed maps of traffic movements, the cops expect smooth functioning throughout the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities on Wednesday.

  • More than 150 major roads in the city will be made unidirectional
  • Wider roads will be divided into two parts to facilitate simultaneous movement of traffic and idols
  • 100 CCTV cameras installed on the Mumbai roads

While Mumbai bids farewell to Ganesha hoping that his next visit is as soon as possible, all that the police want is the festival to pass off in a safe and peaceful manner.
