THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Raising the slogan ‘Better campus, better future’, ‘Sameeksha-2011’, the Science Festival at Mahatma Gandhi College has turned an absolute search for scientific knowledge and values for students. Based on the theme ‘Indian Scientific Heritage’, the fest has opened a cornucopia of knowledge for science enthusiasts. The first day itself witnessed a huge surge of students thronging the campus to take a glimpse of each and every scientific detail on display at the event. Pavilions of various organisations have been erected on the campus premises. Science and Technology Museum and Planetarium, CTCRI, ANERT, ISRO, Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, Forest Department, Medical College, Kerala Livestock Development Corporation and Sree Chitra Institute for Medical Science and Technology are present for the fair. The fest was inaugurated by P G Latha, director of Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute. A ‘Sarpakavu’ created by the students of the college stands for the need to conserve the biodiversity in the International Year of Forests. In order to see the sacred grove, students are drawn in plenty. “Rather than putting up the ‘kavu’ for the festival alone, we would love to keep it up for future”, says Mukesh R, of third year BSc Zoology. Celebrating the International Year of Chemistry, the Chemistry Department of the college has set up a stall, ‘Reactions’, where magic tricks on Chemistry are performed. The food court set up by the Sociology Department of the college, where sumptuous dishes made of organic vegetables are offered, too draws many. Apart from this, the Kerala Village and Craft Fair is also turning a big attraction. Various competitions, film shows, aquarium and bird show are also part of the event. The event is being organised by various clubs, PTA and college union of MG College. The fest is open from 10 am to 4 pm and will conclude on Saturday. Entry is free.
