New Delhi: A Supreme Court-appointed Committee has recommended “immediate reduction of the stray dog population” in Kerala to a “manageable level on a war footing”.

The committee was appointed after a string of attacks by stray dogs led to demands for culling in the southern state, with animals rights groups warning against any such move.

The committee called the situation in the state “very grave” and said failure to arrest the rising stray dog population will lead to the people taking matters in their own hands and resort to unauthorized culling.

In some places in the state, people under the leadership of members of local authorities have started culling of stray dogs, setting off on a path of confrontation with animal lovers, who have started internet campaigns against the move.

The total dog population in the state is 9,23,359, of which stray dogs are 2,68,994.

The Committee, headed by former Kerala High Court judge S Siri Jagan, in its page report, has also informed the Supreme Court of the reason behind local politicians arranging open culling of stray dogs and expressing willingness to go to jail.
