HYDERABAD: Plastic manufacturers and retailers in the city seem to be getting ready for the impending ban by GHMC on plastic of thickness less than 40 microns. With July 1, the enforcement date of the ban, fast approaching, the sale of low thickness plastic carry bags seem to have dropped and many small manufacturers of these bags have shut shop. The secretary of Andhra Pradesh Plastic Manufacturers Association (APPMA), J Venugopal told City Express that most of the carry bags of 20 micron thickness which are used by grocery store owners and food vendors are mainly sourced from outside Andhra Pradesh. The manufacture and sale of this grade of plastic bag is illegal as per the Plastic Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 2011 of the ministry of Environment and Forests. However, the varying standards implemented at state level allowed the use of 20 micron thick polythene bags in Andhra Pradesh. The current ban seeks to enforce the central legislation and ban the use of bags below 40 micron thickness.Owner of Hyderabad Polythene at Begum Bazar said that with the impending ban, traders were clearing out their inventory of 20 micron plastic bags. Nearly 70 per cent of the existing stock has been sold.Further, the small manufacturers have scaled down the production.
