New Delhi: The debates and Opposition offensive over the Sachar Committee report fails to deter the Union Government from its ‘resolve’ to go ahead with the recommendations of the panel, which was formed to study the socio-economic status of Muslims in the country.
Among other things, the Sachar Panel has advocated reservation for the most backward among the Muslim community and creation of an Equal Opportunity Commission.
On Thursday, Minority Affairs Minister AR Antulay announced that the Sachar Committee report will be implemented "in toto in 2007". The announcement comes just a month after the report was tabled in Parliament.
"We will not only implement the recommendations of the Sachar committee, but also its observations," Antulay said on the sidelines of an international conference of Dalits and Muslims.
The UPA Government's utterances with regard to the Muslims seem to be well-timed with an eye on the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, which are scheduled to be held in February-March next year along with two other states.
"The report's recommendations and observations will be implemented in toto in 2007," Antulay said. His remarks came just a day after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's assertion that the government was committed to the uplift of minorities.
The 400-page Sachar Committee report has concluded that the 150 million-strong Muslim population in the country was a deprived lot and that Muslim representation in government employment was a mere 4.9 per cent of the total 88,44,669 employees.
