Kolkata: Kolkata's La Martiniere School board has questioned the authenticity of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) recommendation to the school following the suicide of one of its student Rouvanjit Rawla and ruled out removing the principal.
La Martiniere School board, which met in Kolkata on Saturday, claims that the recommendations are in violation of the NCPCR Act. The school says that NCPCR issued the directions without reason in the garb of the recommendation and adds that the so-called recommendations are in violation of the principal of natural justice.
La Martiniere will write back to NCPCR asking for the details of its investigation report into the Rouvanjit suicide case.
"The findings of the enquiry team which had come has not been given to us. We need a copy of that from them. They have referred to High Court's order about relevent laws. Now we want to know what is that relevent law. We are not able to proceed with the matter as per the recommendation they have given in view of non availability of these documents," said La Martiniere board secretary Supriyo Dhar.
NCPCR had recommended the dismissal of La Martiniere of the principal, vice-principal and stop the increment of three teachers over the suicide of Rouvanjit, who was a student of class 8.
La Martiniere School courted controversy following allegations that the 13-year-old boy committed suicide in February after being caned by Principal Sunirmal Chakravarthi. Rawla's father lodged a complaint against the principal and four teachers.
The Board of Governors of the school has already revised the school's rules and regulations and called for major penalties in case of corporal punishment.
According to the new rule corporal punishment is liable to disciplinary action with the minimum penalty for violation of the rules being suspension and the maximum penalty being dismissal from service with disqualification for future employment.
