CHENNAI: The Rotary Club of Madras Silver Beach in association with the Immaculate Centre for Spoken English, kick-started a permanent free English teaching course for women workers of the Balwadi at Villivakkam recently. The project aims at providing the underprivileged with the opportunity to gain working fluency in English, which has become indispensable for securing decent employment. The women workers of the Balwadi, drawn mainly from the backward areas, expressed their keenness to acquire this special skill as it would give them confidence in performing duties and handling people better, and would help them get better jobs and enhance their standard of living.The Rotary Club of Madras Silver Beach has undertaken many such community service projects, chief among them being the free school for hearing impaired children. The Immaculate Centre for Spoken English is an institution providing training in soft skills andtheir sister concern TI Abroad also facilitates study abroad and has taken up training in English as a Corporate Social Responsibility activity. The course was launched by Vasumathi Marimuthu, District Director, Olympiad of Rotary International District 3230. president Rajan Padmakumar, projectco-ordinator Debbie Westcott, secretary B Chellam Devadoss and special officer of the Balwadi Indira spoke on the occasion. The launch marked a new vista of opportunities for underprivileged women to empower themselves. This initiative has provided free classes to more than 200 students sofar, conducting such projects earlier in association with the Lioness Clubs for college students and for people in various slums across the city.
