Andy Roddick has retired after three sets of his second-round match against Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open.

Melbourne: Andy Roddick retired after three sets of his second-round match against Lleyton Hewitt at the Australian Open due to an injured hamstring.

Australian wild-card entry Hewitt was leading the contest between two former No. 1-ranked players 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday night when Roddick called for the doctor and trainer in the break after the third set.

Roddick had fallen to the court during the first set, but continued despite being in obvious pain from the leg injury. The nature of Roddick's injury was unclear.

Hewitt, who has won two major titles and was a finalist here in 2005, will play Canada's Milos Raonic in the third round.

His participation in the mixed doubles this year is also in doubt now.

Roddick and Serena Williams had entered the draw to get practice in case they decide to play together at the 2012 London Olympics, but Roddick hurt his leg and withdrew from his second-round singles match on Thursday night.

After seeing Roddick's injury, Serena tweeted: "Oh no my dubs partner!!!!! :("
