MADURAI: V V Rajan Chellappa has been announced as the AIADMK candidate for the Madurai mayor position in the upcoming local body elections.Speaking from Chennai, Rajan Chellappa said he expected his selection for the position and thanked the Chief Minister. Chellappa had joined the AIADMK as student secretary during his law college days in 1974. He contested in assembly elections from Dindigul constituency in 1980, but lost. Again in 1989, he tried his luck from Tiruparanguntram Assembly constituency, but that was also a failure. Later, he became a Rajyasabha MP. In 2006, Chellappa contested from Madurai Central Assembly constituency, but lost again. Though his name was announced as the candidate for Madurai Central in 2011 Assembly elections, he was changed later.Chellappa said he would work towards making Madurai city an industrial hub.
