HYDERABAD: The AP Public Service Commission has a new chairperson. Retired IAS officer Rachel Chatterjee has been posted in the vacancy. Governor ESL Narasimhan on Friday gave his assent to the proposal of the state government.According to sources in the chief minister's office, the choice of Rachel Chatterjee, who retired from service in December, is part of an exercise that has begun to appoint people known for their integrity to important offices. "This is the first in the series of initiatives that are going to be taken," a senior official in the CMO said.Chatterjee held import positions in the state government before moving to the central service. She was chairperson of APTransco during N Chandrababu Naidu's tenure and later late YS Rajasekhara Reddy too continued her in that position for long time after he came to power in 2004. At the time of her retirement she was an officer of the rank of principal secretary. After the retirement of Y Venkatarami Reddy on Feb 16, the post has been lying vacant. He held office for five years and seven months. Reddy worked as vice-chancellor of JNTU.During his tenure as APPSC chairman Reddy faced allegations of favouritism in the examination process. The single interview board system that he had introduced also was criticised but Venkatarami Reddy maintained that it was a system that everyone appreciated.
