At least 16 people, including 14 students and two teachers, died after a boat capsized in Harni Lake in Gujarat’s Vadodara on Thursday. The incident occurred while a group of 27 students along with their teachers went on a picnic. A day after the tragic incident, visuals of the tragedy when the students of the New Sunrise School could be seen queuing for the boat ride is going viral on social media.
As per the visuals shared by news agency PTI, the students were seen standing in a line waiting for their turn to take a boat ride. As per preliminary reports, the students and the teachers arrived at the lake at around 4.30 pm for a picnic and boarded a boat that reportedly capsized due to overload.

“14 children and two teachers have died in the tragedy. One student, who was rescued, is undergoing treatment at SSG Hospital,” an official of the Harni Police Station was quoted as saying.
PM Announces Ex-gratia; President Expresses Condolences
Expressing distress, PM Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased. He also announced that Rs 50,000 would be given to the injured.

President Droupadi Murmu also poured in her condolences and said, “The news of the death of children and teachers in a boat accident in Vadodara, Gujarat is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and wish for the success of the rescue operation.”

Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of the kin of deceased and Rs 50,000 help for the injured.
