HYDERABAD: The Praja Rajyam filed a petition with Assembly speaker Nadendla Manohar on Friday seeking action against its MLA  Shobha Nagireddy for voting in favour of the TDP-sponsored no-trust motion against the Congress government in the Assembly on Dec 5 in defiance of the party whip. The party contended in its petition that she should be disqualified as she clearly violated the party whip, attracting the provisions of the 10th schedule of 2,1 B  of the Disqualification Act. The petition was filed by PRP MLA Vanga Geetha. The speaker then issued a notice to Shobha to appear before him on December 19 and testify before him whether she violated the whip or not. The speaker also sent notices to the floor leaders of all parties to file affidavits with him within 15 days if their members had followed the whip or violated them and if they deserved disqualification. If the political parties do not respond within 30 days, the speaker can initiate action suo motu. But Shobha says the whip does not apply to her since she had already given a letter to the Election Commission and the speaker opposing the merger of PRP with the Congress. Since she opposed the merger, she should be recognised as an independent or, since there is no PRP after its merger with the Congress, should be recognised as PRP legislator.
