SRIKAKULAM: About 360 protesters accompanied by leaders of various political parties joined the first anniversary of the relay hunger strike against the proposed 2,640-MW thermal power plant by East Coast Energy Private Limited at Vadditandra village of Santabommali on Tuesday. At the mass relay hunger strike, members of Paryavarana Parirakshana Samithi and protesters from Kovvada discussed the future plan of action to stop East Coast Energy and Kovvada Nuclear Park.“Unlike Sompeta or Santabommali protests, where only locals took active part in the movements against proposed hazardous plants, people across the district should join hands to protest against the Kovvada Nuclear Park and sand mining by Trimex Sands Private Limited,” the participants said. After paying floral tributes to J Nageswara Rao and Yerrayya, who were killed in police firing in Santabommali in February this year, Bhavanapadu Thermal Vyatrirekha Porata Samithi members, supported by TDP’s senior leader T Seetaram and Left parties, raised slogans to continue their fight till Union Ministry of Environment and Forests cancels the proposal for the thermal power plant.“Government are showing apathetic attitude towards the ecological disturbances that may occur due to proposed projects, including sand mining,” lamented president of BVTPS M Narasinga Rao.
