A month after a one-foot-long rusted iron rod pierced through his skull, the parents of a 11-year-old boy finally heaved a sigh of relief. On Friday, doctors at the Vadamalayan hospital, where K Vigneshwaran (11) was admitted, declared that he was ‘safe’, following a risky procedure through which the the iron hook was extracted.
A month ago, Vigneshwaran was skittering on a cot inside his house when a one-ft-long rusted iron hook, which was hanging off a wall, pierced through his neck. He was reportedly seen literally ‘hanging’ from the hook.
Dindigul native Kattu Raja, father of the boy, approached many local doctors to cure his son before he was referred to the Vadamalayan hospital. Vigneswaran was in a critical state when he was brought to the hospital, said Cardiothoracic surgeon Dr P Babu, one among the five doctors who operated on the boy.
“He was not even able to open his mouth as his jaw was displaced,” the doctor recalled. Over an hour-long surgery, the team of doctors successfully extracted the iron rod.
“We took an X-ray of the boy’s skull to find the exact position of the rod. We found that it had pierced the right
side of his chin and reached up to his ear,” Dr Babu detailed.
Luckily, the rod did not damage the blood vessels that pump blood to the brain. “Neither did it damage the veins, nor did it reach up to the brain,” the doctor explained.
Nevertheless, the surgery proved to be quite risky.
“We took utmost care while removing the rusted iron rod. Any minor mistake would have damaged the veins that carry blood to the brain. The boy’s health condition is stable now,” he added.
Maxillofacial surgeon Dr Amarnath, ENT surgeon Dr Papunathan and anaesthetists Dr D Senthil Kumar and Dr Vignesh were part of the five-member doctor team who performed the hour-long surgery.
