A panic situation was created in the city of Mangaluru after several parents complained of receiving threats and blackmail calls demanding huge ransoms in return for releasing their children, who the callers claimed to have been kidnapped or arrested in gang rape cases.
Reportedly, the parents of first-year pre-university college students started getting threat calls from Tuesday afternoon. The police have filed a case in connection to the matter.
“Parents started receiving calls claiming that their children had been either held in a gang rape case or kidnapped. The callers, who spoke in Hindi, demanded Rs 5 lakh to release the students or to clear their names in the cases,” a police officer was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
The calls were made by the numbers +923354533015 and +48699532787, which on Truecaller app showed the numbers belonging to the officers of Central Bureau of Investigation. Additionally, the number showed images of uniformed police officers.
Soon after the calls, the parents contacted college authorities to enquire about their children and received information about them being in the campus attending classes.
The police suspect that someone who accessed details of the students and their parents from their colleges was behind the calls.
