Bhopal: The Supreme Court quashing pleas against the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat has raised tensions across the state. CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said that the state government will approach the apex court with another review petition.
Chouhan further said that the issue pertains to public sentiments more than that of law and order. He, however, did not specify when this petition would be moved before the SC.
Madhya Pradesh Law Minister Rampal Singh also toed the line and said, “We are talking to legal experts to ensure we abide by the Supreme Court’s decision. But at the same time we respect the sentiments of the people. We will also explore options to re-approach the apex court.”
Meanwhile, right-wing outfit Karni Sena, which has picked up arms against the film alleging distortion of history and disrespecting of historical characters, has reiterated its stand. “The SC did not take care of our sentiments but we will continue to urge the public to not watch the movie. We are also urging theatre owners to not screen the film,” Karni Sena state head Raghunandan Singh Parmar told News18.
The theatre owners are also apprehensive about showcasing the film after receiving threats from the outfit. “We are still undecided about the movie. A delegation of theatre owners will call on the CM to discuss the issue,” Secretary Bhopal Cine Association Azizuddin told News18.
He said that if no resolution is found, then theatre owners would have no choice but to remain closed on January 25, the release date of the film.
One theatre owner, on the basis on anonymity, said, “We have no choice but to not screen the movie. The state government does not want the movie to be screened. What can we do in such a scenario? Our hands are tied.”
Other fringe groups like the Hindu Sena also continued to oppose the movie. The outfit announced that they would perform lattha (stick) pujan in the city on Tuesday as mark of their protest.
