Patna: A controversial move to transfer Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jitendra Rana from Patna has backfired for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The Bihar government had transferred Rana because he took on an MLA from the ruling Janata Dal United (JDU) Anant Singh.

Before moving out to his new assignment as SSP of Motihari, Rana said JDU MLA Anant Singh's name has cropped up in a kidnapping case of four persons, one of whom was later murdered. The police has said that the legislator's role would be investigated.

Rana arrested five men who kidnapped and killed a youth. In a dramatic press conference, Rana produced the kidnappers before the media and claimed they acted at the behest of Anant Singh.

Rana was shunted out soon after and shifted to Motihari. The crime took place last week when the kidnappers took 4 youth hostage. One of the abductees later turned up dead. Anant Singh claims he was the one who rescued the boys and handed them to the police who failed to act. The parents of the youth have backed the MLA.
