Don’t be surprised if you come across a notice in any of the government departments requesting people to submit petitions and suggestions in Malayalam. The State Government has come up with a set of guidelines that all government departments must comply with as part of the observance of the year 2012-13 as the official language year.
One of the guidelines is to put up a notice in all government departments requesting people to submit petitions and suggestions in Malayalam from November 1.
Other guidelines issued by the Official Language Committee include putting boards with name and designation of officials in Malayalam and that government vehicles should carry boards indicating the department in the official language.
The high-level committee on official language, presided over by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, would monitor the implementation of the suggestions put forward by the committee.
Also, Malayalam Language Cell will be formed in all departments and a coordinator will be selected in each department to see whether the instructions of the Official Language Committee are being followed.
Apart from this, the Committee on Official Language has decided to print ‘Malayalam is our Mother Tongue, Malayalam is Our Administrative Language’ in calendars, diaries and letters send from the offices of the CM and other Ministers.
Chief Secretary K Jayakumar, poet O N V Kurup, writer George Onakkoor, Palode Ravi MLA and Official Language Department secretary K Suresh Kumar are members of the Official Language Committee.
