New Delhi: NASSCOM president R Chandrashekhar, while commenting on the impact of global slowdown on India, said there would not be any issues if the Indian industry aligned its skills with the changing global requirements. He, however, noted that despite 2,00,000 recruitments by the industry this year, there is a gentle declining trend in hiring for IT jobs.
Chandrashekhar maintained that the trend of hiring has not changed in the first quarter of the current year. He said this is an industry where the sands are constantly shifting.
Speaking on the sidelines of NASSCOM's Future of the Internet in India's report launch in New Delhi, Chandrashekar cautiously responded to the news of technology major Cisco expecting to lay off 14,000 jobs, which is one-fifth of its total work force in the days to come.
This announcement comes after Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard (HP) announced layoffs nearing the 3,000 mark earlier this year. Answering a question on hiring in IT trends for India he said, “When water is flowing all across the world, it will find its own level and therefore, work will get done where there is maximum value for money”.
Chandrasekhar, while declining to call this a global downturn in the IT industry, said the sector was going through a complex series of changes in its business and working models. He added that many of the older skills may no longer be required currently because of new technology and automation.
Many IT companies are looking at new sectors mainly government for more opportunities. Less than 10 per cent of government departments have gone digital across India and government is expected to be one of the top clients for IT companies.
