ANGUL: Contractual workers engaged in four Nalco production units have threatened ceasework from Wednesday demanding a hike in wages. This was announced on Monday following a meeting of four trade unions with the workers.“At least 12,000 workers are on contract with Nalco mines, power plant, smelter and refinery at Angul and Damanjodi. Engaged in key areas of the units, they toil harder than the regular employees for a meagre wage,” said Rajiv Jena, the president of contract workers union. With the management ignoring their long-standing demands, the workers are left with no alternative but to go on a strike. It is going to hit the company hard which is already struggling with multiple problems and its profit nosedived, he added. Admitting to the negative impact the strike will have on Nalco, an official said the company was already paying more than the statutory wages. He was, however, hopeful of a peaceful settlement.
