The Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on Friday directed the premature release of former underworld don Arun Gawli, who had been serving a life sentence for the murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.

A division bench consisting of Justices Vinay Joshi and Vrushali Joshi granted Gawli’s criminal petition, which challenged the rejection of his claim for early release in light of a government notification dated January 10, 2006.

In his petition, Gawli, now 69 years old, cited a government order stipulating the release of prisoners who have served 14 years and have surpassed the age of 65.

Who is Arun Gawli?

Arun Gawli, also known as Daddy, operated out of Dagdi Chawl as his base of operations during the 1980s and ’90s, during which time he emerged as a formidable figure in Mumbai’s underworld. This association led to Dagdi Chawl gaining a notorious reputation, causing people to fear visiting it. It garnered attention from frequent police raids in the mid-nineties when the Mumbai Police decided to confront the underworld head-on.

Gawli’s refusal to join Dawood Ibrahim’s smuggling operations sparked a rivalry between the two. Gawli subsequently established the BRA (Babu Reshim, Rama Naik, and Arun Gawli) gang at Dagdi Chawl.

Despite a brief stint in politics that saw limited success, Gawli maintains considerable support in central Mumbai. The late Shiv Sena founder, Balasaheb Thackeray, publicly acknowledged him as a ‘Hindu Don.’

In 2012, the gangster-turned-politician was sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court in Mumbai, along with 11 others, for their roles in the 2007 murder of Mumbai Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.
