New Delhi: Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik and 130 others was taken into preventive custody by the Karnataka Police on Friday, a day before Valentine's Day to prevent them from creating any trouble. He was taken ito custody near Gulbarga, while 130 activists were detained in Bangalore.
His lawyers have said that they will file for bail.
Karnataka Police has assured that more preventive arrests will be made on Saturday to make sure the men cause no disruption on Valentine's Day in the state.
Almost 18,000 policemen are on duty on Saturday in Bangalore to ensure there are no threats to the public from Muthalik's outfit. State Home Minister V S Acharya has said that the state had taken this measure on its own and not because of any Central directive.
Muthalik's goons had attacked women in a Mangalore pub and threatened to disrupt Valentine's Day in Karnataka, saying these things are alien to Indian culture.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has written to all state chief ministers to ensure curbing of moral policing by over enthusiasts.
The NCW's move assumes significance in the wake of a threat call issued by various outfits, including Muthalik's Sri Ram Sene in Mangalore.
NCW has asked all state governments to ensure that women and girls are not harassed by individuals or groups on February 14.
NCW Chairperson Girija Vyas wants the state machinery to be vigilant on the day.
