Aligarh: Months after stoking controversy, Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University Lt Gen (retd) Zameeruddin Shah has called for Muslims to introspect on the treatment of women. Shah said Muslims lagged behind in development race because they enslaved women.
"You (Muslims) have not utilised half of your population. Women remained enslaved. They remained inside homes. Muslims have no one else to blame. You enslaved women and the result is you are enslaved," said Shah.
The remarks came just months after Shah did not allow undergraduate girls from using the central library of Aligarh Muslim University saying that they would attract boys. The Allahabad High Court intervened and removed the restriction.
Shah had said that there would be 'four-times more boys in the library if girls were allowed in' and that girl students cannot be allowed inside due to a space crunch in the campus.
