Mumbai man sues BMC for Rs 1.5 cr after falling into manhole
He claims he could not take up a lucrative job offer after falling into a manhole and breaking his leg

A man in Mumbai, who misssed a job opportunity after falling into a manhole, has sued the city's civic body for Rs 1.5 crore.

Vijay Hingorani broke his leg after he fell into an improperly covered manhole in the city's Carter Road area on November 29, less than a month before he was to travel to Bengaluru for taking up a new job.

The business analyst, who is sole breadwinner for his family, sued the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation for Rs 1.5 crore as damages for medical expenses, physical injury and loss of livelihood.

"I had the opportunity of a lifetime and I lost it because of BMC. If it collects taxes, isn't it the job of BMC to at least make sure the gutters are safe," Hingorani told CNN IBN.

"My message to them with folded hands is -- please ensure this never happens again," he added.

Hingorani was to join on January 1 at a Bengaluru-based firm which offered him Rs 2.5 lakh a month, apart from an accommodation and other benefits.

He would need at least six months to recover, making it impossible for him to take up the job offer.

The BMC is yet to react on the incident.

Hingorani said he also wanted to highlight that, despite big celebrity campaigns on Swachh Bharat, nothing was being done for the common citizen.

What's your reaction?
