PUDUCHERRY: Mobile number portability introduced in February this year has paid rich dividends to the BSNL as its customer base has seen a steep increase, Rakesh K Upadhyay, the Chairman and Managing Director of the state-run telecom service provider, said.Around 4,000 new customers of other service providers have shifted to BSNL during June, in Tamil Nadu circle alone, he told Express. Going by the current trend, it is expected to add another 7,000 to 8,000 new customers by the end of July.In the telecom circles of Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala , there had been positive response from day one (February 1) with customers of other service providers shifting to BSNL, he said. Many customers who had left BSNL for other service providers have returned, he added. A total of 7 to 10 million customers were added every month in the country since 2007, Upadhyay said.BSNL is all set to improve network coverage for its 15 million customers by installing more GSM equipments, he said. Orissa Telecom circle has registered a growth of 2 to 3 per cent in landline connections bundled with broadband services in sharp contrast to other places where such phones are being surrendered, he said.
