Marriott blast: Prez Zardari likely to delay US visit
Zardari had to leave for US to attend UN General Assembly session.

Islamabad: Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari may delay his visit to the US to attend the UN General Assembly session in the wake of Saturday's suicide bombing at Hotel Marriott in Islamabad in which 60 people are feared to have been killed, a senior government official said.

"What I know is that the President is going to delay his visit in wake of the blast," the official said, adding that Zardari may meet top government officials on Sunday to discuss the issue.

The President, who was elected to office earlier this month, was scheduled to leave for the US next week and was scheduled to meet international leaders, including India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, on the sidelines of the UN meet.

"I believe that the UN General Assembly annual session is the most useless event in the world where leaders go to listen their own speeches," columnist and MP Ayaz Amir said.

He felt that the President should cancel his visit given the circumstances and should instead oversee the steps being taken to combat terrorism and extremism in the country.
