Maoists helping LTTE regroup

Though the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been decimated militarily, there are reports to indicate that the remnants of its cadre are planning to regroup clandestinely through its sympathisers in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India, including Maoist outfits, the Home Ministry has asserted.

In its affidavit filed before the one-man Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal, the Centre — represented by Director of Internal Security R K Suman — said the banned outfit still had the capability to garner local support in Tamil Nadu, owing to its ethnic, cultural and linguistic affinity. A hearing of the tribunal began in Chennai on Friday, to look into the ban imposed on the organisation. “LTTE continued to look at Tamil Nadu as a platform for its anti-India activities. The Central Government has information that indicated that the LTTE continued to be a threat to... the country”, the Ministry’s counsel said.

The Home Ministry also contended that the outfit had not abandoned the goal of achieving a separate ‘Eelam’. On the contrary, it was actively propagating the idea both in India and abroad and was trying to revive itself with the help of Naxals.

Meanwhile, MDMK General Secretary, Vaiko, appeared before the tribunal and intervened against the ban. In response, Suman said cases had been filed against LTTE sympathisers over the last 24 months.
