Kolkata: The West Bengal government has announced to pay 100% crop insurance to the farmers. Currently, 20% of the insurance is being paid by the central government.
“From now onwards, we will pay the entire insurance amount to the farmers. The Centre pays only 20% of the cost with much hue and cry around it,” chief minister Mamata Banerjee said while addressing an administrative meeting in Birbhum district.
“I will not allow the Centre to politicise the farmer issues, by bearing only 20% in the name of schemes,” Mamata said.
Recently, Mamata Banerjee announced series of schemes for nearly 71 lakh farmers. The West Bengal government will pay Rs 2 lakh in case of death of a farmer. The money will be paid to the family in death case of any peasants aged between 18-60 years under 'Krishi Krishak Bandhu' scheme, which will come into effect on January 1.
The West Bengal government also announced Rs 5000 as financial assistance for growing a single crop in each acre of his land in a year.
Mamata Banerjee has earlier as well taken on the central government schemes.
Last year in April, West Bengal government issued a circular, changing the names of central government schemes, including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. It will now be known as Mission Nirmal Bangla.
