Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan on Friday called for constituting a new committee for giving recommendations on academic matters to the proposed Malayalam University.
In a letter sent to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the Opposition leader said that it would not be wise to inaugurate the Malayalam University in a hasty manner on November 1 without taking sufficient preparations.
It is understood that the report submitted by Chief Secretary K Jayakumar is being accepted in its entirety, he said. It is presumed that the report also contains recommendations on the courses being conducted by the university as well as other academic matters.
The report contains courses such as MA (poetry), MA (drama), MA (novel). “The report also said that the university will function on 100 acres land. But that will not be enough to house the University,” he said.
He said more discussions were needed on how much land was required for the university and about its location. The Chief Secretary’s report does not cover how the broad targets of the proposed university will be met.
The Malayalam University should be on the model of Tamil, Kannada and Telugu varsities where there are sufficient provisions for learning linguistics, literature and Kerala culture.
He said that the government should constitute a committee comprising experts and entrust them to prepare an outline on academic matters and other issues related to the university and hold discussions with experts before granting approval to the project.
“With regard to this, the sub-committee can consider the outline submitted by organisations such as Aikya Malayalam,” he opined.
He also criticised the government’s lapses which led to the High Court ruling that the government had no powers to make Malayalam compulsory in CBSE schools.
He asked the Chief Minister to move the Supreme Court to protect the State Government’s order making Malayalam compulsory in all schools in the state.
