BHUBANESWAR: The stretch between the Governor House Square to Jaidev Vihar will have light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights that have been provisioned by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC).In a recent meeting of the BMC, it was decided that the 2.5-km distance would be covered with LED streetlights. “Around 85 poles will be erected on the stretch between the Governor House Square and Jaidev Vihar,” said a senior BMC official. There will be a total of 170 light stands with each pole having two light stands. The project cost has been estimated at Rs 49 lakh. According to BMC officials, the tender for the project will be floated  next week.The project will be developed in the Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The timeline will be three months from the date of agreement with the contractor. “We want the LED lighting project to be completed by the last week of August so that the project can be inaugurated on August 31, which is celebrated as the Local Self-Government day,” said a BMC official. The existing streetlights will be replaced completely.So far, Ram Mandir square-Master Canteen square stretch in the city has LED streetlights. This stretch was completed in 2011. LED street lighting across the city is a part of the BMC’s attempt to conserve energy. LED lighting is considered more energy-efficient. It is also a part of the BMC’s overall beautification plan. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has taken special interest in the beautification and sanitation of the Capital city in the recent past.
