TUMKUR: The Madigas who had waved black flags at UPA chairperson and AICC president Sonia Gandhi when she visited Siddaganga Mutt here last month, are set to repeat the performance when her son and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi visits Dharwad on June 1.The Madigas (Schedule Caste left), who have been up in arms against the UPA government, are leaving no stone unturned to get their demand for internal quota within the Scheduled Caste fulfilled.History of StruggleMandakrishna Madiga launched the struggle first in Andhra Pradesh, following which, the TDP government led by Chandrababu Naidu had conceded to the pressure, allegedly to win them over, and provided a separate quota. But terming it illegal, the Supreme Court put a stay on it, which resulted in the Madigas demanding that the governments at the Centre debate the issue and amend Article 14 (clause 2) of the Constitution to make it a law and ensure separate quota.In Karnataka, the Madigas and its sub-castes, who claim to constitute 57.3 per cent of the total population of SCs as per the L G Havanur report, have been demanding a separate quota.Madiga Dandora state president Pavagada Sriram told Express that they are fed up with the false promises of political leaders and need a concrete decision this time.
